Why You Need to Update Your iPhone

Apple has released several emergency operating system updates in the last few months to fix security vulnerabilities that could affect millions of iPhone users. Here’s what you need to know and why you must update your phone now.

What Does The Update Do?

Just days after releasing iOS 17, Apple released iOS 17.0.3 to fix an emergency security patch that could be used by hacking groups to exploit user information. iOS 17.0.3 also fixed overheating issues and other bug fixes. Apple didn’t comment directly on what kind of information could be taken or what the effects of the security incidents could be, but groups who initially spotted these risks released their own reports. Keep reading to learn what the groups speculated.

Security Risk

The three security bugs were spotted by The Citizen Lab and Google’s Threat Analysis Group. The team at Google’s Threat Analysis Group said a zero-day exploit chain was being used to install Predator spyware, which an Egyptian commercial surveillance company ran. The spyware could be used to record phone calls and get data from messaging apps like WhatsApp or Signal.

This process uses unencrypted traffic when a user tries to visit an https website to redirect the user to their website and exploit servers. There is also speculation that this type of hacking could result in the victim being spied on through their camera and microphone, as well as the ability to take control of devices remotely.

How to Update Your Phone

You can install this new software release by accessing the Settings app, typically found on your device’s home screen. Navigate to the General section and look for the Software section. Here, you’ll find an option to download and install the latest software update. Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and has sufficient battery life. Once the download is complete, follow the on-screen instructions to apply the changes.

Should Users Be Concerned?

iOS 17.0.3 comes in a long line of emergency updates from Apple to fix security issues. This is one of the effects of cyber-attacks becoming more and more unique and resilient, and it doesn’t mean you should get rid of all your Apple devices out of fear. Apple is only becoming more responsive to concerns about security weaknesses, and these updates are likely a good sign that the company is taking steps to keep its users protected. Staying up to date on the latest software releases is one of the best ways to keep yourself protected.
